Smuggled Phone Aids in Prison Break

A convict who escaped a week ago from a Beaumont, Texas prison used a smuggled phone to aid his prison break. This is the first time it has happened in Texas, although similar tactics have been used elsewhere. Within hours, state corrections officials had ordered a tryout of new technology to block cell phone signals as a prelude to beefed-up security to prevent any future incidents.
A demonstration of either jamming or managed-access technology to limit or block cell phone transmissions would be a first in Texas. Prison officials have struggled for years to curb phone smuggling in Texas state prions after a death row offender called a state senator on a smuggled phone. At that time officials decided against such a test because phone jamming violates federal law. The escaped convict met his escape helper on a social networking site that he accessed from the smuggled cell phone. However, his freedom did not last long as he was caught getting off a bus in Nebraska several days later.
